Biktarvy (bictegravir): The 2036 Generic Opportunity Window

Biktarvy, Gilead's once-daily single-tablet HIV-1 regimen (bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide), has been the number-1 prescribed HIV treatment in the US since its 2018 approval, and is Gilead's top-selling medicine overall at $14.3 billion in 2025 sales. No generic sells in the US today. Gilead sued three Indian generic manufacturers -- Lupin, Cipla, and Laurus Labs -- after each filed an FDA application to market a generic version; all three settled in October 2025, agreeing not to launch the adult tablet before April 1, 2036 (pediatric tablets: November 19, 2035, or May 19, 2035, depending on pediatric exclusivity). Two of the three, Lupin and Laurus Labs, already hold real FDA tentative approval for their versions. Gilead's own core bictegravir patents were expected to run out in December 2033; the settlement pushes the real opening of this market more than two years past that.
