Ibrance (palbociclib): The 2027 Generic Opportunity Window

Ibrance (palbociclib), Pfizer's CDK4/6 inhibitor for HR-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer, generated $4.1 billion in global sales in 2025 despite a fourth consecutive annual decline. Its core composition-of-matter patent, US RE47,739, was confirmed by Pfizer's own press release to expire March 5, 2027, following a four-year term extension. No generic palbociclib is commercially sold in the US market today -- the FDA has granted only tentative approval, to Eugia Pharma Specialities (an Aurobindo Pharma subsidiary based in Hyderabad, India), with Dr. Reddy's Laboratories also holding a filed ANDA. A secondary estate of formulation and solid-form patents, independently tracked by patent-monitoring services, could extend real market entry into a 2034-2037 range depending on how that estate plays out. Unlike a drug whose exclusivity has already lapsed, this is a real, dated window that has not opened yet, with two real Indian manufacturers already positioned at its front edge.
